After a brief skirmish between the two groups, X-Force's de facto leader, Cannonball, staged a retreat. The group resolved to hunt down the fugitive and determine what had truly happened.īefore that happened, however, X-Force was cornered by the government-sanctioned team X-Factor, who believed that X-Force knew where Cable was. The members of X-Force were fairly surprised by "Cable's" actions, since he was their mentor at the time. In truth, it was Stryfe, Cable's evil clone, who had framed Nathan Summers for this attempt on Xavier's life. In the first part of this seminal '90s event, Cable seemingly attempted to assassinate Professor X. "X-Cutioner's Song" began in 1992's Uncanny X-Men#294, by Scott Lobdell and Brandon Peterson. While the relative heroes and villains of various conflicts are usually clear-cur thanks to groups like Brotherhood of Evil Mutants, the classic " X-Cutioner's Song" crossover saw the X-Men and their splinter groups nearly enter a civil war against their fellow heroes, X-Force. The X-Men and the rest of Marvel's mutants have found themselves facing off against each other on numerous occasions.
